The Site

Fontarnau is located close to Vic, in Catalunya (Spain), at an altitude of more or less 600m.

It is a Mas surrounded by fields that are still mainly rented to farmers by the family. But we progressively want to take care of them. Above the fields there is a big forest in slope, mainly composed of oak trees and pines. Both these fields and forests are part of the land.

The soils are mainly clayey and calcareous (with a marl substrate) and the pH is alkaline.

ARTICLE : Techniques we used to analyse the soil of Fontarnau

There is few underground streams that come from the mountains, but no overground streams (apart from rainy periods). We collect the water from these underground streams and from rainwater into ponds and tanks.

Vic is situated in the hardiness zone 8b : it means that the average minimal temperatures are between -9,4°C and -6,7°C. The average of rainfall is around 795mm a year, with the most dry period between December and March.
